3 km from the “Queen of Beaches” of Zarautz there is a cozy town named Guetaria, the hallmark of which is considered to be a peninsula in the form of a mouse. This town, despite its small size, has an important place in the history and a culture of the Basque Country. Guetaria was founded in 1180. The first General Assembly of the province of Guipuzcoa was held in 1397 in the Gothic Cathedral of St. Salvador of Guetaria. During this tour you will visit well-preserved church that is incredibly integrated into the city walls.
Here in 1476 was born the famous explorer Juan Sebastian Elcano, who, along with Magellan made the first trip around the world in 1521. In 1895 in Guetaria was born a figure that made a huge impact on the European fashion industry of the twentieth century – Cristobal Balenciaga. In honor of Cristobal Balenciaga here in 2011 was opened a museum of surprisingly large scale, which exhibits the best of the designer and his disciple works.
It is also a wonderful place and one of the best on the basque coast to enjoy a sea food. All the restaurants of Guetaria specialize in cooking fish and seafood on the open grill in the street, and they serve only today´s fish, which the locals caught early in the morning. Also many vineyards and bodegas of local young green wine Txakoli are located around Guetaria, the region is known because of this local drink. In addition to the tour we offer you to visit one of the wineries.
